All About Empanadas
What is an EMPANADA ?
Empanadas are named after the Spanish verb 'empanar' which means to coat or wrap in bread.
An empanada is a fried or baked turnover in the shape of a half-moon made with flour dough, casava or corn flour dough. You can stuff them with any number of things.
We make ours in various flavors: Beef, Ham and Cheese, Cheese, Mexican Chorizo with cheese, and then enclose them in flour dough.
Empanadas are thought to have originated in Galicia, Spain. However, you will find that they are made by different cultures and go by various names. These are a few of the known names:
- Meat Pies (American)
- Empanadas (Latin/Spanish)
- Pastelillos (Latin/Spanish)
- Pastelitos (Latin/Spanish)
- Empanadillas (Latin/Spanish)
- Beef Patties (Jamaica)
- Samosa (India)
- Pate (Haitian Creole)
- Pastel (Portuguese)
- Pastel de Forno (Brazilian)
Jessica's Gourmet Alfajores are unique with a mixture of Paraguyan and Mennonite spices and techniques. We have taken the traditional and given it a bit of a twist of two cultures . As a result we've been told time and again that they are addictive.
Let the addiction begin!
